The Bully – after the event

Last night, over 10% of our families and 3/4 of our teachers attended the viewing of, The Bully, sponsored by WINS. What a wonderful example of parents and teachers working together for the success of all students.
If you missed the event, it is still playing at Santana Row and The Pruneyard.
Also you can participate in an on-line workshop -

Speak Up, Stop Bullying!

Williams Elementary School accepts this challenge.

Williams WINS is providing our community with an opportunity to take part in a nationwide movement to stop our children from being affected by bullying.  We are renting a movie theater at Santana Row on Tuesday May 1st for an adult screening of the movie Bully.

As teachers, administrators, kids and parents struggle to find answers; the movie Bully examines the dire consequences of bullying through the testimony of strong and courageous youth. Through the power of their stories, the film aims to be a catalyst for change in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children and society as a whole.

This extraordinary film follows five bullied kids at public schools in Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Iowa and Mississippi over the course of a school year, including two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her incarcerated 14-year-old daughter. With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals’ offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children.

I and many of our staff will be attending.  Please join us and show your support for this very important cause.

Transitional Kindergarten @ Williams

San Jose Unified School District is proud to announce that we will be offering a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class at Williams for the 2012-13 school year. While there is still some uncertainty around state budgeting for education, the district recognizes that our families cannot wait for the legislature to come to consensus. San Jose Unified’s Board of Education has made the offering of a quality TK program a priority.

Transitional Kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn in an enriching and academically challenging environment that nurtures their growth. Research shows that children who attend kindergarten readiness programs like TK are most likely to do well in school in school and attend college. Offering TK will help all of our students get the best start possible, with curriculum that is designed just for them.
